What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a condition that causes bones to become thinner, weaker, and more likely to break. It develops when your body loses bone faster than it can replace it, reducing bone density over time. Because bone loss usually happens without symptoms, osteoporosis is often called a “silent disease.

Although fractures most commonly affect the hip, spine, and wrist, osteoporosis can weaken bones throughout the body. Without treatment, even a minor fall or everyday activity can result in a fracture that affects mobility and quality of life.

Causes & Risk Factors

  • Increasing age, especially after age 50
  • Menopause and lower estrogen levels in women
  • Family history of osteoporosis or hip fracture
  • Low calcium or vitamin D intake
  • Smoking and excessive alcohol use
  • Long-term corticosteroid use and certain other medications
  • Medical conditions that affect hormone levels, nutrient absorption, or bone health

Common Symptoms

  • Often no symptoms until a fracture occurs
  • Loss of height over time
  • Stooped posture
  • Back pain caused by spinal fractures
  • Bones that break more easily than expected

Diagnosis

  • Evaluation by a physician
  • Bone mineral density testing with a DEXA scan, the primary diagnostic tool
  • Blood tests to evaluate bone health and rule out other causes
  • Assessment of fracture history and future fracture risk

Treatment Approaches

  • Calcium and vitamin D supplementation
  • Weight-bearing and strength-building exercise
  • Lifestyle changes such as smoking cessation and limiting alcohol
  • Prescription medications to slow bone loss or build bone
  • IV infusion therapy for appropriate patients

Benefits of Infusion Therapy for Osteoporosis

Long-lasting treatment

Some osteoporosis infusions are given as infrequently as once a year, helping reduce the need for frequent medication.

An option when oral medications are not appropriate

Some patients cannot tolerate oral osteoporosis medications or have difficulty taking them as prescribed. Infusion therapy may provide another treatment option.

Care with ongoing monitoring

Your infusion is given by experienced nurses under your provider’s orders and established clinical protocols. If monitoring is needed, your care team is there to watch you closely and provide support during treatment.

Connected care with your physician

After each visit, clinical notes are shared with your provider. This helps keep your treatment plan organized and supports communication between your care teams.
