What is Crohn’s Disease?
Crohn’s disease is a chronic autoimmune Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) that causes inflammation in your digestive tract. It most commonly affects the end of the small intestine (ileum) and the colon, but it can develop anywhere from the mouth to the anus. In some patients, Crohn’s also causes inflammation outside the gut — in the eyes, skin, joints, or liver.
Crohn’s is a lifelong condition with a “flare and remission” pattern, periods of active inflammation followed by stretches of calm. Without treatment, it can lead to serious complications including bowel obstruction, fistulas, abscesses, and a higher risk of colorectal cancer.
Causes & Risk Factors
- Family history of IBD — about 1 in 5 people with Crohn’s has a close relative with the disease
- Cigarette smoking — the most important controllable risk factor
- Age — most often diagnosed between ages 15 and 35
- Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry, and people of Northern European descent
- NSAID use (ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac) can worsen disease
- Immune system dysfunction and gut microbiome imbalance
Common Symptoms
- Abdominal pain and cramping
- Frequent diarrhea, sometimes with blood or mucus
- Reduced appetite and unintentional weight loss
- Fatigue and low energy
- Fever during flares
- Rectal bleeding
- Mouth sores (aphthous ulcers)
- Joint pain, eye irritation, or skin issues in some patients (extraintestinal manifestations)
Diagnosis
- Evaluation by a physician
- Colonoscopy with biopsy — the primary diagnostic tool
- Blood and stool tests, including fecal calprotectin to detect intestinal inflammation
- CT or MRI imaging to assess the extent and location of inflammation
Treatment Approaches
- Nutritional therapy to reduce inflammation and support healing
- Immunomodulators to suppress immune activity
- Oral aminosalicylates for inflammation in the intestinal lining
- Corticosteroids for short-term flare relief
- Biologic therapies targeting specific immune pathways

- Antibiotics for complications like abscesses or bacterial overgrowth
- Surgery in select cases — typically for strictures, fistulas, or unresponsive disease

Attentive Care from Start to Finish
A registered nurse monitors you throughout your infusion according to medication-specific protocols and your provider’s orders. Vital signs are checked when appropriate, and our team remains available during your visit. If you have had infusion reactions in the past, please let us know before your appointment.
